 Year:  1955 Location: Hollywood

Notes: Fender introduced the Precision Bass (P-Bass) in 1951. The P-Bass was the first electric bass and was a smash hit. The Precision bass included a Slab double cut away ash body, a single coil pickup, one piece 34" neck (Maple). The early Pbass also featured large Kluson tuning machines heads. These were later replaced by conventional geared tuning machines. In 1957 the pickup was upgraded to a split double coil pickup and a wider head stock was added.

Notes: Never off the Gibson production line, the extraordinary ES-335 family has withstood the test of time for nearly 50 years. The instrument that started as an eye-popping anomaly of Gibson innovation has gone on to set a standard for form, function, and style. From gritty blues, to swinging jazz, to roaring rock 'n' roll and punk, the ES-335 can do it all.

Notes: Introduced in 1956, the Vibrolux originally featured a single 10" speaker, tweed covering, and Fender's lush vibrato circuitry. By early '61, the speaker was upgraded to a more robust 12" and Fender's new brown tolex replaced the tweed covering. As with most Fender combos of the day, it was fitted with a reverb tank in '64 and rechristened the Vibrolux Reverb.

Notes: Gibson's Les Paul Special was introduced as a variation of the Junior model in 1955. It was basically a two pickup version, with the same P90 pickups. Featuring a blonde/yellow finish instead of the typical sunburst, some were referred to as 'TV' models because they looked better on the black and white televisions of the era.

Notes: Introduced in 1959, the Gibson ES-330 was the sister to the ES-335. Featuring a fully hollow body, trapeze tailpiece and either 1 or 2 P-90 pickups, it was a favorite of players wanting an amplified instrument that could retain acoustic properties.

Notes: Introduced in 1949, the ES-175 is easily one of the most versatile and famous guitars in music history. The first Gibson electric to feature a Florentine cutaway, the ES-175 was also one of the first Electric Spanish guitars to be fitted with P.A.F. humbuckers and is prized for its playability, craftsmanship, and full rich tone. The list of players who have utilized the ES-175's distinctive sound reads like a who's who of historic and contemporary jazz, rock, blues and fusion.

Notes: Introduced in 1922, the L5 was a large bodied archtop aimed directly at the jazz market. The original models were F-hole acoustics with a trapeze tailpiece, floating bridge, and triple bound top, back and pickguard. 1950 saw a cutaway added and the body slightly enlarged. One year later, an electric version, the L5CES, was introduced. Single coil P90 pickups were standard until '57 when they were replaced with PAF humbuckers. The L5 remains a staple of the gibson line and jazz guitarists to this day.

Notes: The Gretsch company got a relatively early start with electric guitar production, selling their first models by 1939. However, it wasn't until 1954 that Gretsch became a major player in the electric market. The Electro-II was renamed the Country Club and steadily gained popularity. Two models that stand out the most from this time period of Gretsch are the 6120 Chet Atkins and the White Falcon. Gretsch has enjoyed a position as one of Americas classic guitar companies ever since.

Notes: The Fender Esquire was the first guitar sold by Fender in 1950. Shortly after its introduction, a two-pickup version named the Broadcaster was introduced. The single pickup version retained the Esquire name. At the time, the Gretsch Company had already marketed a drum set under the 'Broadkaster' name, and, at their request, Fender renamed it the 'Telecaster.' Although the one-pickup Esquire was manufactured first, it is now generally regarded as a variant of the more popular Telecaster.

Notes: Watkins/WEM is England's original manufacturer of amplifiers, whose 1954 Westminster guitar amp was five years ahead of Vox, and a full decade prior to Marshall's debut. It's easier to list early English rockers whose first amp WASN'T a Watkins, than to name the countless British Invasion musicians who first gigged on Westminster, Scout, and the more famous Dominator combo amps. The Watkins Copicat Tape Echo is a milestone product, with a sound which some enthusiasts still prefer to that of any other similar unit ever made. Watkins/WEM amps are not common in the United States, outside of recording studios, and in the collections of amp tone aficianados. The aggressive, snarling guitar sounds of Watkins combo amps are belied by these small units' kitschy, almost cute aesthetics

Notes: Since it's introduction in 1961, there have been numerous models that have carried the SG name. There have been "Standard" and "Jr" model, as well as the top of the line "Custom". Originally, the guitar was called Gibson Les Paul SG, but the "Les Paul" was dropped in late 1961. The SG has been used by many prominent musicians over the years, most notably Angus Young of AC/DC and Tony Iommi of Black Sabbath. Gibson has offered different variations and finishes on the basic SG body style and continues to manufacture the original designs as well as special editions.

Notes: Originally meant for country musicians, the Telecaster was released as the Broadcaster in 1950. When first sold in stores, it retailed for less than $200. It was built based on the concept of 1800s German instruments of Johann Georg Stauffer. The Telecaster is one of the most versatile and enduring guitars around.

Notes: Released in 1962, the Jaguar was based on the Jazzmaster, with the same "offset waist" body and "floating tremolo" system. Unlike the Jazzmaster, the Jaguar was fitted with a shorter 24-inch scale, 22-fret neck (the first Fender guitar to have 22 frets) and featured smaller single-coil pickups with notched side plates that improved RF shielding, making the Jaguar less prone to interference than the more popular Stratocaster and Telecaster.

Notes: Although introduced in 1952, the Gibson Les Paul didn't receive the official definition of "standard" until 1960. Built with a maple capped mahogany body and two PAF humbuckers, the standard would become the most desired and valuable electric guitar in history. Played by the likes of Duanne Allman and Jimmy Page, it has truly become the "standard" rock/blues/jazz instrument.

Notes: The Selmer name is rather more familiar as a French manufacturer of school band wind instruments than as an English manufacturer of rock amps. However, dig around on the Internet, and you'll find old photos of Zep, Bo Diddley, pre-fame AND post-fame Beatles, Procol Harum, The Shadows, Gerry and The Pacemakers, all plugged into, or at least sitting next to, Selmer amps (By the way, Gretsch Tennesean + Selmer amp= "House of the Rising Sun", according to the cat who played the riff, Animal Hilton Valentine). It may be a case of history being written by the survivors, but The Story of British Amps is not solely the province of Vox and Marshall. From Selmer's demure Little Giant and two-tone Truvoice, to the mouth-watering, croc-skin covered, blinking-tremolo-eye-havin' Zodiac Twin 50, there is a wide array of COOL British Selmers changing hands among the tone cognoscenti.

Notes: Originally introduced as the Dual Professional in 1946, Fender renamed it as the Super one year later. Pumping 20 watts through 2x10" speakers, the Super is one of Fender's lesser known treasues as it has the ability to attain sweet overdriven tones at fairly low volume. It was unceremoniously discontinued in 1963, but was reissued and enjoyed a five year run as a 4x10 combo from '92-97.
