Notes: The Style 18 Martin guitar (D-18, OM-18, 000-18, 00-18, 0-18) is a spruce top, mahogany body Martin guitar that has been the mainstream of the Martin guitar line since the mid-1800s. The Martin D-18 and other style 18 models are not the fanciest Martin models, but are good, basic guitars with fantastic tone.

Notes: The Martin D-18 Dreadnought is an American classic. Introduced in 1931, the D-18 is the original 14-fret Martin dreadnought and still one of their most popular instruments -- especially among studio musicians. The combination of light, quartersawn mahogany sides and back, and large Dreadnought size produces an exceptionally well-balanced tone. The D-18 is loud, with a bright, clear treble and warm, moderate bass, which makes it ideal for both recording and stage work.

 Year:  1971 Location: Hollywood

Playability: 7.05 lbs.
Notes: Its first electric solidbodies (1962-1964) make Welson appear to be some kind of a subsidiary to the Bartolini-Gemelli galaxy, though some details betray a care of seriousness that put those guitars apart and is typical of Welson. After 1964 the initial design evolves without discontinuity towards a second generation of generally sunburst finished solidbodies, equipped with more conventional controls than the previous pushbuttons stripes.

Notes: The Tele Custom (along with the Thinline and Deluxe models) was an attempt to enter the humbucker market largely dominated by Gibson. The original Telecaster Custom was in production from 1972 until 1981. Early examples sported a curly "Custom" logo and "Witch-hat" vol and tone knobs. Later examples differed; the knobs changed to Stratocaster types, and the "Custom" logo changed to the standard italicized block typeface used for Fenders of the period.

 Year:  1977 Location: Hollywood

Playability: 11.7 lbs.
Notes: In the 1970s, Rickenbacker added guitars with detachable necks and redesigned single and double-coil pickups. A patented feature on some new models, and an option on others, was slanted frets, which better matched the angle of the player's hand. Two double-neck instruments became standard items: the model 4080 bass/guitar and the model 362/12 6/12-string. Bands such as Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers and R.E.M.helped to re-establish the brand, using Rickenbackers extensively during the 70's and 80's.
