Notes: The Epiphone Company was founded in 1873 by Anastasios Stathopoulos. It was purchased in 1957 by the Chicago Music Company, owners of the Gibson Guitar Corporation. Epiphone was Gibson's main rival in the archtop market and their quality archtops-the Emperor, Deluxe, Broadway and Triumph-rivaled (and some contend surpassed) those of Gibson. They also produced professional quality acoustics, basses and banjos.

Notes: The Gretsch company got a relatively early start with electric guitar production, selling their first models by 1939. However, it wasn't until 1954 that Gretsch became a major player in the electric market. The Electro-II was renamed the Country Club and steadily gained popularity. Two models that stand out the most from this time period of Gretsch are the 6120 Chet Atkins and the White Falcon. Notes: Introduced in 1952, the Fender Twin featured a 2x12" speaker configuration, tweed covering, and two 6L6 power tubes supplying 25 watts of power. In '58, Fender boosted the power output to 80 watts with a quad of 5881 output tubes. Known as the "high power" Twin, these models have become the most sought after by both players and collectors. In 1963, Fender added reverb to the design and the Twin Reverb was born. Throughout the years, the ever-popular Twin has had many versions, including the Twin Reverb, Twin Reverb II, Red Knob Twin (often referred to as the "evil Twin"), and, most recently, the '65 reissue.

Notes: Starting it's life as a 1x12 combo in 1955, the Fender Tremolux was changed to a 1x10" piggyback head/cab configuration in 1961. A second 10" speaker was added in late '62 and remained standard until 1966 when Fender discontinued the model. The sweet cleans and gritty overdrive that characterized the Fenders amp of that period and it's striking piggyback style have made the rare tremolux a prize for both players and collectors.

In '60 he founded his own company, Ormston Burns Ltd., which began selling guitars branded "Burns London." Among his most endearing guitar designs were the pointy, horned Bison and a guitar made for Hank Marvin, England's answer to the Ventures.

Notes: Since its introduction in 1961, there have been numerous models that have carried the SG name. There have been "Standard" and "Jr" model, as well as the top of the line "Custom". Originally, the guitar was called Gibson Les Paul SG, but the "Les Paul" was dropped in late 1961. The SG has been used by many prominent musicians over the years, most notably Angus Young of AC/DC and Tony Iommi of Black Sabbath. Gibson has offered different variations and finishes on the basic SG body style and continues to manufacture the original designs as well as special editions.

Notes: The Gibson ES-345 was introduced in 1959, and it represented an attempt to both make an upgrade to the ES-335. It featured new innovations such as Varitone Switch, Stereo capability and an optional Vibrato. The Gibson Company hoped that these additional upgrades would increase sales, and ultimately its share of the electric guitar market at the time. The original ES-345 was a fabulous guitar, and it was the model that blues great B.B. King favored prior to his switching to the Gibson ES-355.

Notes: Introduced in 1936, the Gibson ES-150 guitar is generally recognized as the world's first commercially successful Spanish-style electric guitar. The ES stands for Electric Spanish, and it was designated 150 because it cost $150, along with an EH-150 amplifier. It was an immediate hit in jazz orchestras of the period. Unlike the usual acoustic guitars utilized in jazz, it was loud enough to take a more prominent position in ensembles.

Notes: If there were a Mt. Rushmore for guitar amps, the Vox AC models would definitely be carved in stone. The AC15 and AC30 models (Named for their respective wattages) were the sound of the British Invasion; In fact, The Beatles were contractually obliged to use Vox amps onstage exclusively. The Rolling Stones, The Kinks, The Animals, The Yardbirds, and, later, Brian May, the Edge, Rory Gallagher, Mike Campbell, and Pete Townsend, all made good use of the Class-A AC30's signature growl and jangle. Every studio has one (or needs one).

From gritty blues, to swinging jazz, to roaring rock 'n' roll and punk, the ES-335 can do it all.
